Negatives, mini positives, prints, slides, photo albums, and personal papers, covering the period from the 1950s-1970s, when McDowell served as the principal photographer for the San Francisco Ballet. Also includes photographic documentation of performances by other dance companies, such as Dance Spectrum, Lido Ballet, Ballet Celeste, and the American Ballet Theatre, and of rehearsals at various ballet schools in the Bay Area, such as Ballet Arts Center of Palo Alto, the Ziceva School of Ballet, and the San Francisco Ballet School. Highlights of these photographic files include photos of rehearsals and performances by guest artists Maria Tallchief, Margot Fonteyn, and Rudolf Nureyev; television performances of the Nutcracker in 1964 and Beauty and the Beast in 1966; the American Ballet Theatre's production of Swan Lake in 1967; and the participation of Robert Gladstein, John McFall, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, and Kent Stowell in Choreographers' Workshops held between 1960 and 1973.

Maria Tallchief was born Berry Marie Tall Chief on January 24, 1925 to Alex Tall Chief and Ruth Porter Tall Chief. Later she changed the spelling of her last name to Tallchief. She grew up in Fairfax, Oklahoma on the Osage Indian reservation until the family moved to Los Angeles in 1930. Margot Fonteyn (1919-1991) was an English ballerina. She spent her entire career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet (formerly the Sadler's Wells Theatre Company), eventually being appointed prima ballerina assoluta of the company by Queen Elizabeth II. She was born Margaret Evelyn Hookham on May 18, 1919, to Felix John Hookham and Hilda Acheseon Fontes.
